Artificial Intelligence and Academic Writing: Exploring the Impact of AI-Assisted Tools on Critical Thinking and Writing Skills among University Students

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in higher education, significantly influencing teaching, learning, and academic writing practices. AI-assisted writing tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, and Microsoft Copilot have become increasingly popular among university students because they offer support in grammar correction, language refinement, idea generation, paraphrasing, summarization, citation formatting, and content organization. While these technologies provide considerable advantages by improving writing efficiency and accessibility, concerns remain regarding their influence on students' critical thinking, originality, creativity, and independent writing abilities. This paper explores the impact of AI-assisted writing tools on critical thinking and academic writing skills among university students through a comprehensive review of recent scholarly literature. The study examines both the educational opportunities and the ethical challenges associated with AI-assisted writing, including issues of academic integrity, plagiarism, overreliance on automated systems, algorithmic bias, and digital literacy. Findings from existing research indicate that AI tools can enhance writing quality, increase learner confidence, and reduce language-related barriers, particularly for non-native English speakers. However, excessive dependence on these technologies may weaken analytical reasoning, argument development, and independent problem-solving abilities. The paper argues that AI should function as a supportive educational technology rather than a substitute for students' intellectual engagement. Universities should therefore develop comprehensive AI literacy programs, establish ethical guidelines for AI use, redesign assessment strategies, and encourage responsible integration of AI into academic writing instruction. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on AI in higher education by presenting a balanced perspective on its educational potential and associated risks.
